3D Holistic Complete and pills

Sat here with a rather a nasty eye infection at the moment, this article from The London Eye Hospital is more relevant than usual.  The hospital is based in Harley Street (www.londoneyehospital.com) and they have recently launched its ‘Holistic Complete’ supplement which contains all the essentials of an everyday multi-vitamin but with added lutein and zeaxanthin, proven to delay or even prevent age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Lutein and Zeaxthin are found in high concentration in the eyes and are usually found in combination in many vegetables, they are powerful antioxidants and are believed to help prevent the eyes against harmful uv rays.

It’s easy to neglect eye health during our 20’s and 30’s, but like any other muscle in the body the eyes need to be looked after to ensure a brighter future. AMD, the biggest cause of blindness in later life, can develop as early as our 40s. The good news is that with proper nutrition and care, eye health can be prolonged and reduce the chance of looking back with regret.

The formulation of the supplement range (which also includes MacuLEH and MacuLEH Plus, suitable for those already noticing eye degeneration) has been exclusively developed by the London Eye Hospital based on the nutrients included for analysis in the second age-related eye disease study (AREDS2®) recently undertaken by the National Eye Institute in the U.S. The study which monitored over 4,000 people over a period of 4-5 years. AREDS2® built on previous work that demonstrated that a modified combination of vitamins and minerals can reduce the risk of vision loss from AMD.

Bobby Qureshi, Consultant Opthamologist at the London Eye Hospital outlines the benefits:

“Here at the London Eye Hospital we pride ourselves on specialising in AMD diagnosis, treatment and surgery. Research shows that lifestyle can play an important part in preventing the onset of AMD – for example stopping smoking can reduce the risk enormously. However, nutrition is also a critical factor and recent studies indicate that certain vitamins and minerals can play a key role in preventing the condition. After evaluating every supplement that we could find in chemists, health food shops, opticians and online we still felt that there was something missing.  Our extensive experience led us to believe that a range of more comprehensive supplements was required, so we decided to create our own ‘ideal’ formulae. As we specialise in this area, we could cut through the noise and concentrate on only the important things – the type of ingredients, their dose and the scientific justification for their inclusion. The results of this recent study confirm our product’s effectiveness.”

AMD is an eye condition that primarily affects a small part of the retina at the back of the eye called the macula. The condition causes problems with the central vision that is used when looking directly at something, for example when reading or watching television, and sufferers may find that their vision becomes distorted or blurred. AMD can take two forms: wet and dry. The most common form is dry AMD (also known as Geographic Atrophy), which occurs when the light-sensitive cells in the macula gradually die off. Wet AMD tends to only affect 10% of sufferers and is caused by a weakness in a membrane under the retina which allows abnormal blood vessels to grow into and underneath the retina. These vessels leak fluid and this can result in rapid deterioration and distortion of the central vision. Dry AMD can also progress to wet AMD.

For those who have already lost vision, the London Eye Hospital also offers pioneering new surgical approaches to the management of this debilitating disease, with a research and development programme that harnesses the experience of world-leading optical physicists to design its own unique intraocular lenses for the optimisation of vision in AMD.
