Our next tip is from the hair expert, hair consultant, and product innovator Scott Cornwall. A recent winner at the 2013 Hair Awards, Scott’s “consultancy teaches clients the cuts, styles and colours which suit them specifically working with client psychology as much as physicality. His hair classes also teach the principles of creating great hair at home and the secrets to finding a perfect hairdresser or salon”.He asserts that his mission is “to ensure everyone not only has perfect hair, but understands the secrets to their own particular hair and what suits them specifically”.

Scott’s Tips:

1) Pay attention to texture in hair, beachy type hair can look less flattering on women over 45. Instead, opt for smooth finishes from blow-drying or using heated rollers to give the hair a sleeker texture which will also create an appearance of health and vitality

2) When covering grey, work with the grey formation and use a lighter shade (for grey coverage only) to produce soft multi-tones. Remember, grey hair sometimes needs warm toned colourants to effectively cover. Even if you are cool toned, using a warm toned colourant will ensure good coverage and create a neutral result in the hair – as opposed to a flat overtly cool shade.

3) If you are going grey, beware of bleach foil highlights. Highlighting with bleach over grey will produce a very cool, wiry blonde effect. If you are finding your roots are quite grey and have been having blonde highlights switch to using a
lighter blonde all over colourant. The colourant will give the hair a richer texture and sheen, whilst the white hair will cover to a much lighter blonde and give the appearance of highlights anyway.

4) If you had it the first time, try to avoid the second. Basically meaning if you are old enough to have sported a hair fashion trend when it was first in vogue it’s very likely this will not suit you should the trend come around again!

5) Aging hair will typically become thinner. Use of colour will help this issue, also try using an Air Styler with a volume mousse to dry the hair. This will give movement and shape and is quick and effective.

6) Using a product such as Shine On will also give additional lustre to the hair and the collagen contained will also plump the hair giving more fullness.

7) Even if you are warm toned, light blondes can go a buttery shade if not toned. Try using Colour Restore Iced Platinum to keep the shade a pure blonde.

8) If you want to work with the grey in your hair, you can have foil highlights and then tone with Colour Restore Cool Ash. This will produce an even grey effect and the conditioner element of Colour Restore will prevent the hair looking wiry.
