Our next tip is from Fiona Klonarides, the founded The Beauty Shortlist. She was voted 15th in the Who’s Who Top 25, Natural Beauty Yearbook 2013 and is shortlisted for Beauty Blogger of the Year in the 2013 Fashion Monitor Journalism Awards. The Beauty Shortlist was ranked the No. 2 beauty blog in the UK by Cision (February 2013)

Fiona’s Tips:

Last summer, a shocking photo of a 69-year old truck driver’s face made the internet rounds. The right side of his face looked pretty good for a 69-year old man. His left side – the side exposed to the sun’s rays through his driver’s side window day in, day out, during 28 years on the road – looked like cracked earth in a drought. Deeply lined and drooping, the left side of his face was a chilling example of photo-aging. Not nice. I feel like a nag, but using sunscreen regularly has to become a natural habit, just like cleansing every day, althoug try telling that to 99% of the British population. Let’s face it we’re all sun-starved so the last thing we feel like doing is blocking it out the sun we don’t get to see often enough.

So hurrah for the new generation of self-tanners with no digestive biscuit smell, and facial SPFs that don’t leave a ghostly white veil. I think self-tanners and sunscreens are two of the most interesting areas for development in the beauty world, not least because skin cancer rates are skyrocketing, so look out for even more advanced formulas to come.

Six Ways to Protect your Skin this Summer:

1) Use a daily SPF, like REN Photoactive Sun Veil SPF15, or at the very least use a daily moisturiser with a built-in SPF of at least 15 (I’d use an SPF25). Your skin will thank you for it in the years to come.

2) Find THE best self-tanner you can afford. Good ones include Dior, Sisley and Caudalie. I’m a big fan of Xen-Tan’s Luminous Gold Gel which gives excellent coverage and always looks natural

3) Photo-aging, which destroys skin’s elasticity and collagen, leaves skin looking horribly leathery and it’s tough to reverse, so if ever there was a case for “prevention is better than cure” this is it.

4) I prep for summer with a gradual tan for the face and body, applied every two days for a week before I go away, and then use an SPF50 when I’m somewhere quite far south, e.g. Morocco or Greece.

5) Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Look for products with hyaluronic acid in them and moisturise whenever skin feels like it needs a drink. You also want to be doing whatever it takes to boost your collagen by taking a supplement like Collagen Shots, or collagen tablets. And drink! More water. Less alcohol.

6) Wear the ultimate sun block – a visor – if you’re out exercising in the sunshine; it’ll protect your face from premature lines (or more of them if you already have them).
