If you needed a good reason to eat chocolate, here you are –  we can all stop feeling guilty as the wonderful cure all chocolate has been found to boost brain function – time to  break open a new packet!!

Past studies have shown how this delicious food can help in the fight against heart disease and cancer.  But now new studies are showing it also keeps you mentally fit.

Italian researchers recently carried out a trial on 90 elderly patients for hypertension.  The subjects were split in to 3 groups, one group drank 990 mg of chocolate per day, another 520 mg and the third just 45 mg, all of them showed mild cognitive function problems.

After eight weeks the subjects took tests to examine their cognitive function.

And the results…

The subjects who consumed the most of this drink had significantly higher cognitive scores. They had better hand-eye coordination and verbal memory. And they performed better at task switching than those who consumed the least amount of the food. Just by drinking Chocolate. But not just any chocolate… dark chocolate.

A food that is craved by so many actually helps our memory.

Chocolate is loaded with flavonols. It’s also high in magnesium, vitamins A, B1, B2, D, and E.3 Its powerhouse of antioxidants help fight off free radicals. That keeps our bodies healthy and strong.

“This study provides encouraging evidence that consuming cocoa flavanols, as a part of a calorie-controlled and nutritionally-balanced diet, could improve cognitive function,” said lead author Dr. Giovambattista Desideri – Now we know why we love Italian men so much, they advise us to eat our most loved food and make us feel good about actually doing so.

How can this be?? Flavenols improve blood flow to the brain which boosts memory and alertness.

Researchers at Nottingham University have shown that drinking cocoa actually dilates blood vessels to stimulate blood flow to key areas of the brain for up to three hours and said that this may actually help with dementia.

Dark chocolate contains the highest levels of the brain boosting flavonols, so put away the selection box, just a little of the dark stuff goes a long way – 70% cocoa is the best.
