What Does a Dermal Roller Do?

Dermal Roller is a simple, safe, painless and virtually risk-free treatment for:

  • Wrinkles and lines
  • Lack of skin firmness and elasticity
  • Scarring
  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne and chicken pox scars
  • Sun damage

Skin Needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy) is the latest skin renewal technique to restore the healthy youthful appearance of your skin, at a fraction of the cost and with minimal or zero downtime. Skin Needling produces similar results to Dermabrasion, Lasers and Deep Chemical Peels, but is much less invasive and does not require the removal of the epidermis. As a result the healing time is significantly shorter and there is no post-treatment skin sensitivity to UV light. Skin Needling is also one of the few skin therapies that is suitable for treating all skin types, including ethnic skin, and which can be used to treat the fragile skin around the eyes, mouth and on the neck.

What is the Dermal Roller?

Dermal Roller creates a multitude of tiny puncture wounds to the dermis which induces the release of growth factors that stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin. Creating dermal damage without removal of the healthy epidermis, as with other resurfacing techniques, means the healing time is rapid and does not cause any comparable pain. Results are quick and will last.

In contrast to many other skin renewal treatments, such as chemical peel and dermabrasion or laser resurfacing; treatment with the Dermaroller does not destroy the upper layers of the skin to induce collagen growth. Instead, the Dermaroller induces collagen synthesis by creating micro-punctures in the epidermis without compromising its integrity, without a prolonged down time and without a high risk of complications. Finally, Dermaroller is also the most cost-effective way of effective skin regeneration when compared to other therapies.

What is the Dermal Roller used for?

Ageing skin

  • To restore firmness and tightness to flaccid skin. A less invasive alternative to small face-lift and eye-lifting procedures (great results in the skin above the eyes can be achieved due to natural elevation of eyebrows as a result of healing)
  • To thicken the epidermis and enhance dermal compactness Suitable alternative to ablative resurfacing treatments in patients with thin skin A virtually painless and cost-effective treatment alternative to non-ablative laser therapy (i.e. Fraxel)
  • To smooth wrinkles, lines and folds Suitable alternative for injections with collagen, hyaluronic acid and other types of dermal fillers due to natural synthesis of collagen, elastin and other components of intracellular matrix
  • Improves skin texture and the appearance of large pores Pore size reduction occurs due to increasing collagen production around the pore (which helps to squeeze the pore tighter) and due to increasing elastin production (which allows stretched pores to revert back to their original size)

Scars

  • To reduce the appearance of indented acne scars
  • To improve scars caused by chicken pox
  • To help relax old scars
  • To diminish the appearance of old surgical scars The results of Skin Needling with the Dermaroller are superior to dermabrasion

Hyperpigmentation

  • To lighten pigmentation marks

Stretch Marks

  • To improve the appearance of stretch marks from pregnancy or weight loss

Cellulite

  • To improve the appearance of cellulite

Is the treatment different from Home Use Dermalroller?

In clinic a Medical Grade Dermal Roller where the needle length from 1.5-3 mm, where as Home use one will be only 0.2-0.5 mm. Therefore, the result will be much more effective.

How is the Treatment Administered?

Skin Needling procedures are performed in a very safe and precise manner with the use of single-use sterile Titanium Dermaroller (Medical model 1.5-3 mm). The procedure is normally completed within 30-45 minutes.

Before the procedure commences a topical anaesthetic or local block should be applied to the skin to ensure your comfort and a pain-less experience. After the skin is numbed, the practitioner gently rolls the Titanium Dermaroller over the client’s skin to puncture the outermost layers of the skin and create minuscule sub-cutaneous injuries. These microscopic wounds stimulate new collagen deposition which may last for up to a year, yet they close within less than an hour.

What is the Skin Appearance After the Treatment?

After the procedure the skin will be red and flushed in appearance in a similar way as moderate sunburn. You will also experience skin tightness and mild sensitivity to touch. This will diminish greatly after a few hours following treatments and within the next 24 hours the skin will be completely healed. After 3 days there is barely any evidence that the procedure has taken place.

Post-Treatment Recommendations

Immediately after the procedure…

  • If a topical layer of Post treatment serum was applied after the skin needling procedure, it must be kept overnight and washed off the next morning. In this case, use clean warm water only and pat face dry gently with a clean soft towel.
  • Unless otherwise directed by your physician, the use of cleansers or topical products should be avoided for at least 36 hours post treatment. Antiseptic washes, creams and/or prophylactic antibiotics may be prescribed.

After the skin has healed…

        • Make-up may be used when the skin is completely healed
        • A normal skincare regimen can be resumed once the skin has completely healed

Follow-up Treatments

Depending on the initial skin condition and the anticipated procedure result, Skin Needling procedures can be repeated without limit every 6-8 weeks, although a course of 3 skin needling sessions is usually sufficient. 6-8 week intervals allow for maximum new collagen deposition and assessment of the single treatment results, however, collagen formation can continue for up to 12 months after one treatment.
