Ingrown hair is a condition where the hair curls back or grows sideways into the skin. It may or may not be accompanied by an infection of the hair follicle (folliculitis) or “razor bumps” (Pseudofolliculitis barbae).

The major causes of ingrown hairs in both men and women are: shaving, waxing, epilating and electrolysis. Typically it is caused when the hair is quite strong in texture and the new hair grows back underneath the skin often causing inflammation and infection, which may lead to scarring. As this is caused by hair growing back on itself it is very common with curly hair.

With shaving African American men account for the highest percentage, and about 20% of Caucasian men experience this problem on a daily basis. It is a very great problem for women who wax and shave their legs and bikini line. Shaving causes the ends of the hair to be sharpened, thus making it easier to penetrate the skin, causing razor bumps leading to tenderness, itching, and burning, it can make shaving nearly impossible as well as painful.
